Black Ice Makes for a Dangerous Morning Commute

By Second Sergeant Brian Synan
January 22, 2010

At 06:43 hours, Rescue 20 was dispatched to the area of 4185 Round Top Road in the first due district for a reported single vehicle accident with one overturned and unknown injuries. Rescue 20 would hit the streets with a crew of five with Lieutenant 20-2 in the officer's seat. As the Rescue began climbing Round Top Road and the elevation gradually increased the roads became more and more icy. The crew arrived on scene to find a Ford Ranger on its driver side with the single occupant out of the vehicle with a head injury. Crews stabilized the vehicle with cribbing and contained fluids while waiting for the tow to upright the vehicle.

While enroute to the call on Round Top Road, an additional call was given to the Rescue crew. This one was for a vehicle accident on Meadowbrook Road involving one vehicle into a pole with pole and wires down. Lieutenant 20-2 requested Station 9 (Level Green) be dispatched on the fill. A firefighter from Station 20 was quickly on scene advising of hazardous road conditions and that all occupants were out of the vehicle. However, the road would need to be shut down to the wires down across it. Squad 9 handled the traffic detail until Rescue 20 cleared the first accident on Round Top Road. Also, during the call, Station 20 was dispatched to Sardis Road for a tree down. Chief 78 advised that Public Works would handle.

A third vehicle accident was reported at 08:40 hours on Bulltown Road in the area of Casta Lina Court. With Rescue 20 tied up, Rescue and SOC 78 were put in on the fill. Assistant 20-1 would go directly to the scene. Crews arrived to find a Chevy Colorado overturned with the single occupant out of the vehicle and uninjured. Rescue 20 eventually arrived to find that the vehicle was already on the tow and command beginning to release units.

A busy yet safe morning was had by all. Great work to the crews from Stations 20 and 78, Murrysville Medic One, Murrysville PD, Murrysville Public Works, and Wally's Transport.
