At 12:09 AM, Westmorland 911 dispatched Station 20 (Murrysville VFC) for a report of a smell of natural gas in the area of Trafford Road and Lyons Run Road. Station 20 responded with Engine 20 (4 firefighters including Lieutenant 20), and an additional firefighter going directly to the scene. Also dispatched to support Station 20 was Station 610 (Murrysville Medic One) and the Murrysville Police. Upon Engine 20's arrival in the area, Lieutenant 20 established command, and it was found that the Peoples National Gas Company Pipeline Station near the intersection of Trafford Road and Murry Highlands Circle was venting small amounts of excess natural gas every 3-5 minutes due to a periodic overpressure in the gas transmission line. Engine 20's crew measured the local atmosphere using 4-Gas Meters and found no hazards. Westmorland 911 was notified of the situation, and Command 20 released Engine 20 for return to service and station.
