At ~ 1:30 PM, Westmoreland 911 dispatched Station 20 (Murrysville VFC) for an Automatic Fire Alarm (AFA) at a home on Bella Vista Court. Station 20 responded with Truck 20 (3 firefighters including Captain 20), with a firefighter going directly to the scene, and 3 firefighters (including Chief 20 and Assistant Chief 20) preparing to crew Engine 20. Westmoreland 911 also dispatched the following stations to support Station 20: Station 22 (Export VFC), Station 64 (White Valley VFC), Station 78 (Sardis VFC), Station 9 (Level Green VFC), and Station 610 (Murrysville Medic One). The Station 20 firefighter going directly to the scene was the first on scene, found no smoke or fire coming from the residence, and ensured that the occupants were safe. Truck 20, Squad 22, and Engine 22 arrived on scene, with Captain 20 establishing command. Command 20 cancelled all additional responding stations, and the firefighters from Stations 20 and 22 entered the structure. Upon investigation it was found that the homeowner had turned on the gas fire place without opening the Chimney Damper, thus filling the home with smoke. The firefighters turned off the gas fireplace and ventilated the structure. Once the home was ventilated and the AFA System reset; Command 20 returned all Station 20 and Station 22 units to service and station.
