By Secretary Mike Cline
September 6, 2020

At ~6:38 PM, Westmoreland 911 dispatched Station 20 (Murrysville VFC) for a report of a generator smoking outside of Murrysville Rehabilitation and Wellness. Station 20 responded with Engine 20, Truck 20, and Squad 20, with Assistant Chief 20 and Captain 20 going directly to the scene. Upon Station 20's arrival at the scene, Assistant Chief 20 established the command, found that the facility exterior transformer was smoking, and requested that Westmoreland 911 activate additional stations to support Station 20. Westmoreland 911 dispatched the following additional stations: Station 610 (Murrysville Medic One), Station 78 (Sardis VFC), Station 64 (White Valley VFC), Station 22 (Export VFC), and Station 236 (Holiday Park). Command 20 positioned Truck 20 at the front entrance of the facility order to deploy its ladder/platform, Engine 20 was positioned to protect the building from the smoking transformer, while responding Station 610 units were placed in support positions. As the additional responding firefighting units arrived, Engine 78 was positioned at the closest hydrant to provide the water supply, Engine 64 was positioned to support Truck 20 and Engine 20, while Truck 236 and Engine 22 were placed in a staging area to be called forward as needed. West Penn Power's Crew arrived and shut down the utility feed to the defective transformer, then the firefighters used a water stream to cool the transformer. The Facility Emergency Evacuation Protocol was activated under the supervision of Station 610 EMS, and all the residents were evacuated to a safe location. Combined Interior Firefighter/EMS Teams ensured that all residents were out of the facility, and that no fire had extended into the facility. Once the emergency power supply was established, Command 20 declared the facility ready for reoccupation, and the firefighters assisted EMS and the facility staff in moving the residents back into the facility. Command 20 returned all responding fire units to service and station.
